BMW . How to Replace Brake Rotors on a 1996 Isuzu Rodeo

Brake rotors are critical safety components on the 1996 Isuzu Rodeo. Over time, these rotors may become rusty, worn, cracked or dotted with "hot spots" that contribute to accelerated and uneven brake pad wear. Fortunately, replacement rotors are relatively inexpensive and simple to replace yourself. You shouldn't attempt this, however, if you do not have a reliable shop jack and two sturdy jack stands, as these are critical to completing this process safely.
Difficulty:Moderately Easy
Instructions Things You'll Need
1996 Isuzu Rodeo
Replacement rotor designed specifically for the 1996 Rodeo
Floor jack
2 jack stands
Wheel chocks
Tire iron
Flat head screwdriver
Phillips head screwdriver
3/8-inch hex ratchet wrench
Twist tie, nylon tie or twine

Step by Step :
1
Park the Rodeo on a flat, level surface and put the parking brake on. Make sure the steering wheel is not locked.
2
Slide the floor jack under a solid part of the Rodeo's frame at either the front or the back of the truck, depending on which rotor you want to replace. If you must replace rotors at both the front and the back of the truck, you must do either the front or back rotors first and then repeat this entire process on the other end.
3
Slide wheel chocks behind each of the tires on the end of the car that you are not jacking up.
4
Jack up the truck until it is high enough for you to get jack stands underneath the frame. Place both jack stands under solid parts of the frame, then slowly lower the jack so that the Rodeo is resting solidly on the stands.
5
Approach the wheel you want to work on and use a tire iron to loosen and remove the lug nuts securing the wheel. When they're all removed, pull the tire straight out towards you to remove it.
6
Look at the brake caliper, which is the outermost component of the caliper and brake pad assembly clamped to the rotor. Depending on whether or not your Rodeo has aftermarket brakes, there will either be one or two large bolts connecting the caliper and the caliper mount. Choose the appropriate tool (either a flat head screwdriver, Phillips head screwdriver or hex ratchet wrench) and remove the bolt or bolts. Lift the caliper off and hold it in your hand.
7
Use a piece of twine or a tie of some sort to secure the caliper to the underside of the frame. This is to keep the caliper from dangling by the brake cable, which can damage the cable and create a dangerous situation.
8
Look at the caliper mount and take note of the way the brake pads are seated inside. Pull both brake pads out and set them aside.
9
Use a hex ratchet wrench to remove the bolts holding the brake caliper mount onto the rotor. With these bolts removed, pull the caliper mount off the rotor.

Step by Step :
10
Pull the rotor straight out from the wheel mount spindle.

Step by Step :
11
Slide the new rotor onto the spindle and push it all the way back.

Step by Step :
12
Slide the caliper mount onto the edge of the new rotor in the same place it was installed on the old one. Insert and fully tighten all of its mounting bolts.

Step by Step :
13
Slide both brake pads back into the caliper mount in their original position. If you are installing new pads as well, slide those in instead.

Step by Step :
14
Remove the tie supporting the caliper while holding onto the caliper so it doesn't drop. Place the caliper in place on top of the pads and caliper mount, then insert its bolt or bolts and tighten them down.

Step by Step :
15
Slide the tire and wheel assembly back onto the wheel mount spindle. Make sure it's on all the way, then replace and tighten down all of the lug nuts.

Step by Step :
16
Repeat this process on the other rotor on the same end of the truck, if desired.

Step by Step :
17
Slide the floor jack back under the truck's frame and jack it up until the truck just lifts off of the jack stands. Pull the jack stands out and slowly lower the truck back down to the floor.

BMW . How to Replace Audi Brake Rotors

It's important to inspect your Audi rotors if and when you experience lurching or wobbling of the vehicle during braking. If the rotors show signs of cracking or pitting, they may require replacement. These instructions can be followed to replace the rotors on any Audi, though it is worth noting that there are many brake caliper design variations among the different Audi models and the numerous aftermarket brakes that may have been installed on your Audi. With this in mind, it is important to cross-reference these instructions with a service manual specific to your year and model of Audi.
Difficulty:Moderately Easy
Instructions Things You'll Need
Service manual for your year and model of Audi
Floor jack
Two jack stands
Wheel chocks
Replacement rotors for your year and model of Audi
Hex socket wrenches and socket set
Phillips head screwdrivers
Flat head screwdrivers
Pliers
Tire iron
Twist ties

Step by Step :
1
Park the Audi on a flat surface and put the parking brake on. If you will be replacing the front rotors first, place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. If you're replacing the rear rotors first, place wheel chocks behind the front wheels.
2
Slide the floor jack under a solid part of the car frame on the end of the car that you'll be working on first. Carefully pump the jack and raise the car until it's high enough to slide jack stands underneath.
3
Slide two jack stands under the car on opposite sides of the end you're working on. Make sure they're positioned under solid parts of the frame. With the stands in place, carefully lower the jack until the car is resting on the stands, then pull the jack out.
4
Approach the first wheel you want to work on and use the tire iron to remove all of the wheel lug nuts. When the lug nuts are off, pull the tire toward you to remove the entire tire and wheel assembly.
5
Study the caliper and brake pad assembly clamped to the rotor, and if you have a service manual for your car, open it up to a diagram of this assembly. The goal is to determine exactly how the caliper assembly is held together. On many Audis, there is a thin wire clip that surrounds the entire caliper assembly, but this may not be present. You should also see one or two bolts holding the caliper itself in place, and another series of bolts holding the caliper mount against the rotor.
6
Remove the wire clip, if applicable, using a pair of pliers.
7
Use a hex socket wrench or screwdriver, depending on your caliper bolt style, to remove the bolt or bolts holding the outside of the caliper against the caliper mount. When you do this, the caliper will come loose. Make sure you support the caliper and do not allow it to dangle from the brake line.
8
Attach the caliper to the underside of the frame using twist ties so that it will not dangle from the brake line. Allowing the caliper to dangle may damage the brake line, which is very dangerous.
9
Pull the two brake pads, which should now be exposed, out of the brake caliper mount.

Step by Step :
10
Remove the bolts holding the brake caliper mount onto the rotor. This will require either a hex socket wrench or a screwdriver, depending on the bolt design. Pull the mount off of the rotor when the bolts have been removed.

Step by Step :
11
Slide the old rotor off the wheel spindle.

Step by Step :
12
Slide the new rotor onto the wheel spindle.

Step by Step :
13
Put the brake caliper mount back on the rotor in the same position it was installed on the older one. Insert the bolts and tighten them all back down.

Step by Step :
14
Slide the brake pads back into place in the caliper mount.

Step by Step :
15
Take the twist ties off of the brake caliper and place it on top of the caliper mount. Replace the bolts holding the caliper together and tighten them down.

Step by Step :
16
Slide the tire and wheel assembly back onto the wheel spindle and tighten down all of the lug nuts.

Step by Step :
17
Repeat steps four through sixteen on the other wheel on the same end of the car.

Step by Step :
18
Slide the floor jack back under the frame and pump it up so that the car rises and inch or so above the jack stands. Remove the jack stands, then slowly lower the car off the jack.

Step by Step :
19
Repeat this entire process on the opposite end of the car.

3. The excess and used exhaust fumes pass from the turbine to the exhaust system and continue on their way to the tailpipe and out into the air in their usual manner. 4. The more load on the engine, the hotter and faster are the exhaust fumes that turn the turbine. The faster they turn it, the more air the compressor sends to the engine and the faster the engine can go. This unique way of converting exhaust gas energy into mechanical power has a nice merry-goround effect. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, usually the first thing an engineer learns is "The simpler, the better," or, as the Zen monks put it, "Less is more." (Ecology, engineering, and philosophy all in a couple of paragraphs! Maybe I ought to change the name of this book to Zen and the Art of Auto Maintenance.) Don't confuse turbocharging with supercharging. A supercharger is a pump that compresses the fuel/air mixture and forces it into the cylinders of a gasoline-powered car: Because superchargers are usually belt-driven by the engine instead of by exhaust gases, they use engine power to increase engine power. Because they're not fuel efficient, they generally are used only to increase the speed of "high-performance," low-efficiency vehicles. Turbocharging kits are available that you can install on conventional vehicles to increase their power and performance. However, because turbocharging places considerable stress on engines that weren't designed with turbocharging in mind, you run the risk of damaging your engine and voiding all existing warranties if you decide to boost Old Faithful with a turbo kit. So investigate the situation carefully before you go this route. Some owners have had marvelous success, and their engines have lived to tell the tale; others haven't been as lucky. Generally speaking, I would never attempt to turbocharge the original engine of an older car, nor would I tinker with anything but a ruggedly built engine in top condition. If Old Faithful is beginning to show the strain of passing years, it would be wiser to recycle the old workhorse and buy yourself a turbo-powered filly! .ver since mechanically propelled vehicles replaced horses as the primary mode of transportation, people have been trying to invent engines that enable vehicles to go faster, cost less, and use fuel more efficiently. After relatively brief romances with steam and electricity, the internal combustion engine became the primary source of automotive power. In the United States and many other parts of the world, gasoline is the preferred fuel for passenger vehicles, while diesel fuel often powers trucks and agricultural and construction equipment. In many parts of the world where gasoline is in short supply, most of the passenger vehicles have diesel engines, too. In recent years, environmental concerns about the impact of automotive exhaust on air quality — plus the fact that the world's supply of petroleum is rapidly diminishing — have created an intense effort to develop vehicles that run on alternative fuels. Vehicles that run on liquid gases of various kinds, electric vehicles (EV), and vehicles driven by exotic hybrid engines and fuel cells are being touted as prime candidates for "Car of the Future." The first section of this chapter tells you everything you need to know about vehicles with diesel engines. The rest of the chapter brings you up-to-date on the alternatives that are currently considered to have the most potential for supplanting the internal combustion engine in years to come. 132 Part II: What Makes It Go?. Diesels For Dummies This section is structured as a mini-version of Auto Repair For Dummies devoted entirely to diesel-powered vehicles. It spells out both the advantages and disadvantages of owning a diesel-powered vehicle and explains how a diesel engine works. It also provides instructions for maintaining and troubleshooting diesels and for finding a good diesel mechanic when your best efforts just aren't enough. Although diesel-powered vehicles are almost universal in a large part of the world where gasoline is almost unavailable, diesel engines are used mainly for heavy equipment in the United States and Canada. Diesel-powered cars exist, but — except for a short period in the 1980s, when fuel shortages made them popular because they got 25 percent more miles per gallon than gasoline engines — they have acquired a reputation for being noisy, underpowered, smelly, and cantankerous. This is not always the case, however. Mercedes-Benz, who pioneered the diesel car as a luxury vehicle decades ago, still makes diesel-powered vehicles that many consider unsurpassed for beauty, performance, high resale value, and high price tags. Volkswagen, whose VW Rabbit was the first peppy, moderately priced diesel car, still offers diesel-powered vehicles, and other manufacturers also offer diesel cars and trucks. If you're considering buying a diesel-powered vehicle, take a good look at the next section before you decide. The good and bad about diesels To accurately compare diesel vehicles with traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, you need to consider a number of pros and cons.

PRO: Diesels get great mileage. CON: So do vehicles with fuel-efficient gasoline-powered engines, which often cost a couple of thousand dollars less than diesels. You can buy a lot of gas for a couple of thousand dollars!
